If were 1 Nation under God, then why?......
Rep Mary Miller (R-Ill) wasnt wrong
A recent article for CNN opened this way.
Now I can say with confidence that what I write from here on will offend many, cause a few to get their panties in a bunch, and may even cause a few to curse, but it needs to be said.
Mary dared to say what every Christian should be calling out. But we have become so weary of being called names that we have allowed our strong Christian origin as a nation to be hidden, and worse, lied about.
Let us begin with this: before we were America, when it was British Christians coming to the New World to be free to practice their Christian faith, it is there we see the spirit of those who founded the New World and whose offspring went on to create the United States of America.
Before ever landing at Plymouth, these weary travelers, the upper crust and the lowly, gathered aboard ship to create the document known as the Mayflower Compact. It was an agreement of what their stated purpose for coming was.
There were 3 key themes in the document.
First, they were to glorify God. Second - Further the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Third - Form a civil body politic or government.
Clearly the intent was to form a government established on the first two items.
We know in the century to follow that the role of Pastors was critical to the move towards independence. The British had labeled them the “ Black Robe Regiment.”
The Scottish Presbyterians are not mentioned by name in many standard (secular) history books, but without a doubt, they played a vital, key role in the American Revolution. Entire congregations, along with their pastors, enlisted in the colonial army and marched into battle together for American freedom.
Meanwhile, John Witherspoon (the Founding Father you’ve probably heard the least about in the history books) famously said, “Cousin America has run off with a Presbyterian Parson!”
It was the pastors who rallied congregations to stand for rights that came from God, not man, and to this day, that is the foundation of our country. In our nation’s capital is the statue of John Peter Muhlenberg, a pastor who led his congregation off to the war for independence.
So, if we are a nation founded on Christian beliefs, why would this Congresswoman be wrong in calling out the wrong of a Sikh chaplain opening our Congress in prayer?
John Quincy Adams is quoted to say - The highest glory of the American Revolution was this: it connected in one indissoluble bond the principles of civil government with the principles of Christianity.
His father, John Adams, said - Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.
Benjamin Rush, a key founder, said this - The only means of establishing and perpetuating our republican forms of government is the universal education of our youth in the principles of Christianity by means of the Bible.
Many more Christian quotes by our founders can be found at: https://www.azquotes.com/quotes/topics/founding-fathers-christian.html
But I listed all of that to say this: if we believe in our motto, “ In God we Trust,” and if we ascribe to our pledge, “ One nation under God and we hold to the 10 Commandments that tell us to have no other God before us, they why would we ever have a Sikh or an Imam open our congress with a prayer to a god that is no god, in direct disobedience to our belief in the 10 Commandments.
I mean, then why not a warlock or some other pagan deity? America doesn’t prevent a person from believing in another god, but our laws and practices must never be based on those other religions.
Would you expect to go to an Islamic nation and have them let you open an event in Jesus’ name? No, of course not. I’ve grown so weary of Americans in general and Christian Americans in particular who are afraid to declare the historical foundations of our country.
History books have been rewritten with no factual footnotes included. Simply one man’s rewrite, and that’s what our school kids are learning today. It’s no wonder there is an explosion of Christian schools being started across our nation.
So, to Representative Mary Miller, keep on keeping on. Keep bearing the truth and don’t apologize for speaking the truth. Neither the Congress, liberals, nor those of other nations will stand to judge you; only God has that right and power, and you are on His side.
To anyone who may have read this and gotten offended, I offer this solution. Get in the car and drive to Home Depot, buy some lumber to build a bridge to help you get over it.
I close with these words from Benjamin Franklin that may well have saved our Constitutional Convention.
I have lived, Sir, a long time and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth -- that God governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without his notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without his aid? We have been assured, Sir, in the sacred writings that "except the Lord build they labor in vain that build it." I firmly believe this; and I also believe that without his concurring aid we shall succeed in this political building no better than the Builders of Babel
